Terminology
 

A brief description of each column heading used in all of the Flinthill Deep Sky Guides
 
Column Heading Description

RA Right ascension - - east-west location measured in hours/minutes
 
DEC Declination - - north-south location in degrees of arc
 
CON Constellation - - The area of the sky in which the object is located, such as Orion, Hercules, Sagittarius, Leo, Bootes, Scorpius
 
TYPE Object classification such as
Gx-galaxy,
OC-open cluster,
GC-globular cluster,
PN-planetary nebula,
DN-diffuse nebula,
C+N-star cluster with nebulosity,
Quas-quasar,
Quad or 4**** - quadruple star,
Tpl-triple star,
Dbl-double star,
Star-.noteworthy star,
DkNb-dark nebulosity,
GxC-galaxy cluster,
N- nebulosity
Ast-asterism of stars.

OBJECT ID Name or number assigned to object by astronomy community

A one to four digit number has an assumed prefix of NGC (New General Catalog).

A one to four digit number preceded or followed by an "I" indicates the object is listed in the IC (Index Catalog).

Meade or Med - guide number assigned by Meade Corporation

Pk, Ter, Mrk, etc. - is an abbreviation of astronomers sir name such as:
M-XXXXXXXXXXX Messier
H-William Herschel
Arp-Halton Arp Atlas of Peculiar Galaxies
S-A - Shapley-Ames Catalog of Bright Galaxies
Hic - Hickson Galaxy Clusters

 
AKA Common name - most often used in addition to alpha numeric designation
 
SIZE Size of object measured in degrees & minutes of arc
 
MAG Brightness of object
 
Description Dreyer assessment, data source descriptions and personal observations
 
Comment   Observation based
