Adjustable hanger for the CR Speed®
and other holsters

For about two years I've been shooting action pistol (USPSA). For almost all of that time, I've been using the CR Speed® hoster by Rescomp Handgun Technologies. It's a great holster. I can't say enough good things about it. It's a very positive holster (gun never falls out, can't fall out when it's locked). It's very simple (there isn't anything to break or quit working). And it's a very FAST holster.

My only complaint (and it's not really about the holster) is the rather rudimentary hanger that comes with it. There is very little adjustment possible with the stock hanger. I wanted to be able to position the holster so that my hand hit the pistol more naturally. Rescomp has recently added a hanger with more adjustments to their newest model and it is available to retrofit older hosters (for a fairly substantial price) from a number of companies that sell competition shooting accessories.

Since I've set up my own (small) machine shop, I've designed and been building a completely adjustable hanger. I originally built this hanger for the CR Speed holster, but have adapted it to fit the Limcat hoster. That combination has been used quite effectively by a friend of mine.

This hanger attaches easily to the CR Speed holster in place of the stock hanger. It locks solidly to your holster belt (1 1/2" or 1 3/4"). It is constructed of machined 6061 aluminum bar stock (the small bar between the hanger and the holster is tool steel).

This hanger is adjustable in three axes at both ends (at the hanger, and at the holster) and locks solidly when you have it where you want it. I've been using one for a couple of months now and having the holster in the proper position has improved my draw by a solid .2 sec. The pictures below give some idea of the possible adjustments in position.

A friend of mine (Alex Wakal) used one of these adjustable hangers with a Limcat holster to win C class open at the 2001 Carter Martin Classic in San Angelo, TX. (I used one too but trashed stage two and didn't win my class in limited division.) This is what Alex has to say about the McCoy adjustable holster hanger -

"...replaces the third generation Limcat cast plastic parts with steel and anodized aluminum...the support strut is steel, not plastic, while the hanger and hoster support are rock-solid anodized aluminum....two full pivot points allow the holster to be positioned EXACTLY where you want it..this allowed me to move the holster to my perfect draw position and shave an immediate tenth of a second off my draw."

I'm hoping that other people will use this holster hanger and have the same sort of success Alex had!

I anodize these hangers to provide protection against corrosion and some scratch resistance. I make them either black anodized (as in the pictures above) or clear anodized (which leaves the hanger silver, at left). I'm considering adding other colors as well (Alex claims that red is a reasonable color for shooting accessories, but I'm resisting pink, lilac, violet, and chartreuse).

OK, Now I've got some other colors. The hanger is available in red, gold, or black.

I'm not a production shop. I'm just a shooter who machines things as a hobby. However, I am making a small number of these hangers for other shooters. An instruction sheet (185k) and a parts diagram (560k) for the holster hanger are available as .pdf files.
